Reverse Monte Carlo modelling

چکیده

Reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) modelling is a general method of structural modelling based on experimental data. RMC modelling can be applied to many different sorts of data, simultaneously if wished. Powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction (including isotopic substitution), x-ray diffraction (including anomalous scattering) and electron diffraction, extended x-ray absorption fine structure and nuclear magnetic resonance (magic angle spinning and second moment) have already been used to provide data. RMC modelling can also be applied to many different types of system—liquids, glasses, polymers, crystals and magnetic materials. This article outlines the RMC method and discusses some of the common misconceptions about it. It is stressed that RMC models are neither unique nor ‘correct’. However, they are often useful for aiding our understanding either of the structure itself, or of the relationships between local structure and other physical properties. Examples are given and the possibilities for further development of the RMC method are discussed. (Some figures in this article are in colour only in the electronic version)

Comparing RMC and RDM glass structure modelling methods

The Reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) method involves usually one or several thousands atoms, and modelling may start from random atomic positions. The Rietveld for disordered material (RDM) method needs a crystal structure as starting mean model, with hardly more than 20 independent atoms. The two methods are reconciled when a satisfying RDM model, enlarged by multiplying the cell axes, is subjected t...

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements have been conducted on liquid phosphorus trichloride, tribromide and triiodide. Molecular Dynamics simulations for these molecular liquids

Synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements have been conducted on liquid phosphorus trichloride, tribromide and triiodide. Molecular Dynamics simulations for these molecular liquids were performed with a dual purpose: (1) to establish whether existing intermolecular potential functions can provide a picture that is consistent with diffraction data; (2) to generate reliable starting configuratio...

Atomic structure of pressure-induced amorphous semiconductors

The paper will briefly review and discuss results of our investigations on the atomic correlations in amorphous Zn-Sb, GaSb, GaSb-Ge and Al-Ge alloys. These semiconductor alloys were prepared by solid state reactions in the course of heating the quenched highpressure phases. Structure of the final products was studied by neutron diffraction for the Al-Ge, GaSb and GaSb-Ge alloys and by transmis...
